If you want a sub sandwich, you can't go wrong with Lil' Pickle. There are a ton of other sub shops like Togo's, Subway, Jersey Mike's etc, but for my money, Lil' Pickle beats them all. You get quality deli meats combined with fresh bread and mozzarella cheese. You can get other condiments and your choice of mayo or oil to complete your sub. When I'm in the mood for this type of sandwich, I don't go anywhere else.

Grabbed the Natural Sub (#4) that everyone was talking about. It was simple and delicous (espeically with extra avocado spread on the side). The sub contained Turkey, avocado spread, cheese (lots of it), in between two freshly baked breads. The total came out $6.50, a very reasonable price for such a tasty meal. I'll definitely come back to try their other items if I'm in the area.

Awesome place for a great lunch. Cash only, but if you use the atm there they will give you a free drink. I usually get the grinder or anything qith the avacado spread and it does not dissapoint.

Some coworkers and I frequent this place on lunch. It's amazing, I thought I had some good sandwiches until I went here and found out how wrong I was. This is now the standard which I gage all other sandwiches on. After little pickle I have stopped going to subway cause the difference in quality so far apart that they aren't on the same planet. I always get the club sub... It's a dream and the cheese they use is the best. If you haven't gone yet what are you waiting for?

I love this place. Been going here since 1997. Love their tuna sandwich on wheat, w/ mustard, tomatoes, lettuce. ...And the best part was their whole PICKLE!!!! I love their pastrami sandwich as well and many more. ....! decent carrot cake! Service is alright.

It's a Ma and Pa sub shop serving subs that are mediocre at best. Yes, the bread tastes as fresh as fresh baked bread, and the gourmet chips were good. The meat was fine and the # selections made it easy to choose. (Turkey, roast beef, etc., limited toppings, decent cheese). The desserts looked chemical laden and the special guac-mayo was just a slab of pure green mayo. Yuck. I won't be eating mayo in awhile because of it, either. And the "lil' pickle that drew us in was--you guessed it--an average pickle, and very little. I wanted to try something different than the typical chain, but in truth, had I eaten at a chain today (Corner Bakery?) I believe I would have received tastier, healthier fare. Fine if you're in a rush, and I appreciate that they support their local sports teams. I could see how this would be a go-to place if you had many fond memories here, but otherwise, I'd take a pass and keep on drivin'.

Soooo good! I went at around 1 and it wasn't crowded and I got my sandwich in literally two minutes. Such quick service! The bread was warm and chewy and the avocado spread was delicious. I wish it came with more than one pickle, but I can settle for one. Definitely coming back since I live so close to here!

I've been coming to Lil Pickle since I was knee-high to a Junebug. Seriously. I don't remember a time that there wasn't a Lil Pickle. Sandwiches are light years above the flavor of major franchise chains, and not as expensive either. Plus, they carry my favorite kinds of potato chips! Lil Pickle for life! (I'd have given 5 stars, but since they are cash only, it's a little inconvenient at times. If they change to being able to take debit cards, I'll change to 5 stars!)

Old School sandwich shop, really a great place! I always get the #1 Junior and it's delicious, they steam the bread so it's soft and warm when your sandwich is ready. Really nice and friendly staff. And don't forget, they have the "Lil Pickle Sandwich Club", ask for a card, once you buy 8 sandwiches the 9th is free! Some have mentioned that they are "cash only", true to a certain extent. They do only take cash, but they have an ATM on the premises, and if you use the ATM, you receive a free fountain drink. Of course there's an ATM charge so I always hit the Wells Fargo ATM at Baker/Harbor before arriving. You can't go wrong here, great sandwiches and it's a step back in time! You'll love it! Plus, they open at 10am!

I LOOOOOOVE this place!! Their service is fast. Their drinks are cold. The subs are DELICIOUS!! The bread is warm, soft and fresh! the meat is not fatty and cheap, but flavorful and stacked on! It's both a blessing and a curse that Lil' Pickle is kinda far from my place. A curse bc i can't eat it as often as I'd like. A blessing bc I can't eat it as often as I'd like. Lol. I recommend getting the Grinder 'Spicy' (meaning, they add Tapatio). It gives it a nice kick! Just had a sub yesterday, and can't wait to go back for more! Only bummer: Cash Only, though they do have a generic ATM in the front.

Oh Little Pickle, I want to have an affair with you. I promise I'm not being dirty, but the food is just that gooood! I usually come here during lunch, which can be stupid because it's insanely packed, but I just don't care. I'll sit through the line, complain that there is nowhere to sit, and continue eat my sandwich and leave vowing to only return earlier or later in the day when I come back. It never happens, I always go to lunch around the same time, and I always swear the same thing. My go to is the original Turkey sandwich. I don't know what addictive drug they sprinkle on the sandwich, but I feel like I inhale the damn thing even before I've fully sat down. Served on a warm and delicious French Roll, you will find yourself taking another bite before you've finished chewing the previous one. Something about the lettuce, tomatoes and cheese always tastes better when it comes from this little sandwich shop and I don't know why. Maybe it's magic? If you don't have cash, don't fret- they have an ATM on premises. The owner is really cool and understands that service fees suck and will give you a free large drink if you show him your receipt from the cash dispensary. Delicious sandwich and a free drink? Who says Christmas can't come every day.

my mom use to come here in high school and we go here almost every sunday. there super Friendly and honestly have the best sandwiches. there bread is SUPER soft and piled high with lettuce and cheese and every sandwich comes with a pickle. I would go here every day if it was closer

  • Nicole Q.

Free chips if you have to take cash out of the ATM- no debt/credit. Ordered the veggie sandwich. You know, when I used to come here as a little girl, I LOVED the veggie sandwich, but I recall actual avocado on the sandwich, not mayo with a hint of green. Blech- won't go back, but the guy who was running the show was nice.

I use to love this place but the prices have gone up and the sandwiches have gotten smaller and less meat

  • Jennifer P.

sandwiches and not just any, the sub to be more specific. On a hoagie roll that they say are made by them. The bread was soft and the meats were not overly salty. Considering they have salami for many of their sandwich options, i was expecting saltiness, but it wasn't at all. It's not a bad price either for your choice of a 10" regular or a 6" junior. They do only take cash so be prepared. My only caveat is if you want veggies in your sub, it's kind of lacking here. There's enough, but I would have liked a little more.

My boyfriend brought me here today and now I see what all the hype is about. I don't remember what I ordered but my sandwich was amazing. It was so fresh. The place had a mom and poo shop feel to it and I dig that. I will be coming back to this place for sure. Maybe even tomorrow lol

  • Matt C.

Far better than any sandwich chain you can go to. I always try to make a point to come here whenever I am in the area. All their subs are tasty and fresh. The people here are always very friendly and the food is great too!

Scenario: Whenever your taste buds cry for a delectable sandwich! Pros: - Warm, steamed bread!!! - Fresh ingredients - Nothing is fried or grilled - Very short wait time - Avocado spread....need I say more?? - Macaroni salad! Cons: - Cash only - Must eat sandwich right away...doesn't sit around very well Recap: Sandwiches here are to DIE for. No bells and whistles here...it's your basic sandwich (i.e. bread, meat, and veggies) but a very well-made one. All of the meats that they are use very flavorful and moist. They also use a great salami that isn't dry or overly salty. They make a fresh avocado spread that put in their sandwiches and it adds just the perfect amount of flavor. And best of all, they STEAM their bread. Holy hell.....fluffy and warm sandwich. Bad part is that you have to eat it right away. After the bread cools, it turns as hard as a rock...hard enough to be used as a weapon. My fav sub? The Famous Sub....get it, and prepare to send your taste buds into a frenzy. You can also ask for onions and peperoncinis in your sandwich, at no extra charge. Bring cash, no credit cards (they do have an ATM in the back). This is a small family owned business with deep roots in the community. They sponsor local schools and clubs year after year, and the evidence is (literally) on the wall, judging by the overwhelming amount of plaques and pictures.

I love going here for a quick sandwich! Much better than a subways or quiznos! Their bread is simply one of the best breads u can find out there. You get deli meats of great quality, fresh shredded lettuce, and above everything else, their AVOCADO MAYO. Oh my lord that is to die for when eating a sandwich. simply amazing. Lil Pickle is definately the place to go to when you crave a cheaper sandwich.

So I love pickles.. and naturally wanted to try this place. It is a Mom and Pop type of shop which I love. I always like to support a homey small business. Pop is really grumpy though. He was so grumpy that I thought he was joking in a sarcastic funny way. I asked for my bread to be toasted and he said No... they dont have a toaster, they usually steam thier bread. He said this with a straight face. I really thought he was joking and I just moved along with the rest of my ordering process. I get my sandwich and he was really not joking. Just being rude I guess. Anyway I would love this place if they got a toaster. It's a major pet peeve of mine that on the days I spoil myself by eating bread I get untoasted bread. I know a lot of other reviewers enjoyed it but I like bread toasted.... *SIGH* If you get an italian or gridner etc, pay attention to the types of meats. One of them resembled baloney too much for my liking so if you dont like wierd mystery meats just double check. If you like baloney dont worry, you will love it. All of the other ingredients were fresh and delicious though.

Working on catching up on my list of reviews but just had to throw this one down while I could. Staying in Costa Mesa over the weekend and wanting to try something new and 'mom and pop'.. came across the listing for Lil Pickle. Cute name, totally old school digs.. but meh. What a disappointment. We ordered the egg salad and the #4. Cash only and make sure you tip or you may get kind of a look headed your way. They were nice enough minus the fact that I GOT NO AVOCADO SPREAD. The bread is alright. It's fresh but it only appears soft because they steam the bread briefly before making the sandwich. It tasted alright but you get this squishy-stuck-on-your-teeth bread that is not as appealing as fresh baked bread of the non-steamed sort. The sandwich had mayo.. of a greenish nature.. so I'm not sure if that's supposed to be the avocado.. but otherwise.. I saw, tasted, felt, smelled no avocado on my otherwise plain turkey sandwich. I'm not a fan of shredded iceberg but otherwise this sandwich had nothing to wow me. It's not bad .. but I would have much rather gone to subway. I'm not a fan of egg salad but the boy unit said it was definitely good. Nothing special but it was tasty is was he said. Pickles were good but it tasted like the Claussen pickles straight out of a jar and cut down to save money. The food alone and the meh but fast service earns a 2.5. I agree with the other sub 3 star reviews in general. I will be nice and give it 3 stars for being a mom and pop store that supports the community and evidences support from back in the 80s fwd. Would not suggest and I will probably not return. How can you forget avo spread on the sandwich?! It wasn't even that busy. Wasn't worth my time to raise hell but eh. Sorely sorely disappointed.

What can I say? My family has been patronizing the Lil' Pickle since before I was born. It's an institution. They are great supporters of local sports. I can see pictures of teams that my coaches were on when they were growing up. Pretty neat as a community icon. As for the sandwiches, they are simple and tasty - everything a deli sandwich should be. Bread rolls are white hoagies, with generous sizes. I order the vegetarian. It's got avocado spread, shredded mozzarella cheese, mayo, and veggies. Just what I want when I'm jonesing for a deli sandwich and chips. Beats the tar out of any Subway or Togo's. Beware-cash only. But there's an ATM inside if you forget.

My wife and I joke that we put "Lil Pickle" on the pedestal. It is true ... we always wish we lived closer to this spot because the sandwiches are so good! I think it has something to do with the bread, which is moist and delicious (I guess on second thought, this doesn't sound appetizing for bread -- but believe me, it is!). Don't forget the bacon!

  • Jennifer F.

OMG YUMMY! We went last night and it was heavenly. No joke that the avocado mayonnaise/sauce is amazing. We tried #1 and #7 (The Little Pickle Sub and The Sub, I think on the second one) and both were so delicious. The bread (which I found out from the guy who worked there) is from a bakery in Pomona and they get it every week. It is super fluffy and perfect. The meats and veggies all taste fresh. We paired it up with a bag of salt and vinegar kettle chips - perfect combo. We are definitely coming back. We love this little hole in the wall joint. This place makes you not ever want to go back to Subway or other sandwich franchise places.

Tuna tuna tuna! Fresh ingredients, steamed bread, all white meat tuna...can't go wrong. My new favorite lunch spot. It's always busy but you never have to wait long. Tons of local sports team memorabilia on the walls, shows how active they are in contributing to their community. Love supporting local small businesses, especially when they have delicious sandwiches.

I can't believe it took me so long to find this little gem!! Talk about good quality sandwiches!! I went here on my lunch break & the food was ready fast & tasted delicious! I got the #4 turkey & avacado & my hubby got the #1 the orignial. They have a junior 6 inch size (which filled me up without any sides) and a 10 inch. The bread was warm, soft, and tasty! And it comes with a pickle! :) The only compliant we both had was that there was not much meat in the sandwiches. My husbands came with 3 types of meat, but there was only one thin slice of each. They also charge 50 cents for a refill of fountain drinks, but their medium and large sizes are more like large and extra large so it's probably better as it limits us soda drinkers from drinking too much soda!! Also they only take cash so bring cash or else endure the ATM fee to pull out cash!! They also have a club card so if you purchase 8 sandwiches you get a free one!! They also have a few desserts if you have a sweet tooth after your sandwich! The shop is very small, but quaint!! They have been there for a long time and you can tell that just by looking at their walls that are covered in sports teams they have donated money to or teams they have sponsored . It's nice to know your giving money to a place that gives back to the community!

Definition of hole in the wall good. Fast service. The lil pickle original and egg salad were delicious. Decent price for what you get.

  • Eden O.

divey little sandwich shop that has been here since the 80s, or so it seems? the walls are plastered with team photos of local high school sports teams they have sponsored over the years. they have about 15 different sandwich choices. bread rolls come steamed, which is a nice change up. pickles really are delicious. cash only, but they have an ATM and will give you a free soda if you have to use it.

My coworker brought me back a sandwich from Lil' Pickle today. It was a regular Italian Sub. It didn't look that big but once I bit into it, WOW! The bread was my favorite part. It was soft and just meshed perfectly with the meat, veggies and the small hint of italian dressing. Very light and flavorful. Of course the signature pickle brought a nice acidity balance to the sandwich. These guys put alot of love in their sandwiches. They lost one star because the quanitity of meat was lacking in the sandwich. Double the meat - 5 stars!

  • Jesse D.

Any place that has the menu option of adding chopped habaneros to your sandwich is a winner in my book. I don't literally have a book. I'm just attempting to be metaphorical. The idea of keeping a book with you at all time to recor... Wow... I went off on a little tangent there. The many sandwiches here are expertly put together with perfectly paired ingredients... Their bread is soft and warm and ridiculous! The only bummer and the reason they aren't a FIVE star joint is the fact that they don't take plastic... CASH ONLY here. I understand the logic behind their decision as business. Understanding why however, doesn't make it less a pain in the ass for me!

    (4)
  • Joseph C.

Cash only. Has a nice feel with the pictures of the local sports teams. Their bread and meat are a little questionable on the quality. Overall the sandwich was good, make sure you go light on the avocado spread, they will really slather it on. Located next to a liquor store and gas station so a nice quick stop for refueling "everything".

    (3)
  • Dee T.

The 5 stars is based solely on their tuna sandwich. I don't see it as a negative that they only take CASH. It is what it is. IMO they put a more than generous amount of tuna, so if you do decide to try the tuna I recommend asking for "easy tuna". Their bread is so spongy and fresh which makes the sandwich even tastier! They do get pretty busy around lunch time, but I avoid the lunch hour rush by calling in my order. The people at the cash register are also really great! Definitely give this place a try!!

I used to LOVE this place... it's been a while since I have been back only to find ROACHES in my sandwich and my husbands pickle... I am so disgusted and just the thought of seeing them on our food I'm feeling sick to my stomach! I actually brought the food back to them and they didn't even know what to do or how to handle the situation. The girl in the front (the cashier) was a nice girl and all but when she showed the roaches to the ladies in the back they just looked at it and just talked in Spanish amongst themselves... didn't even come up to me to say anything! The cashier girl just comes back to me and kept asking what I want from them... really?! I just told them they should clean and inspect that place once in a while. That place looks like they never clean it. I just grabbed a bag of chips and said they should clean their place and my family and I left. I hate to say this, but me and my family are NOT coming back...

Total childhood flashback! Just wonderful subs ... Best bread ever! Same decor, same fantastic food! It's so nice to see a little bit of my past still intact! promise you won't ever change, Lil Pickle!

The best ever BLT with Avocado spread!!! Simply Amazing!!! The dough is also very fresh and tasty. The pickles are lil but tasty. This place has been here over 25 years and I don't think they will be leaving anytime soon. They have GREAT sandwiches.

Great sandwiches, really good bread. The famous sub is excellent and great tuna sandwiches. Cash only, but they have an ATM inside the restaurant and they'll give you a complimentary drink if you use it.

I should have written this review years ago, but I wasn't living in Orange County for a while and I neglected my favorite neighborhood sandwich shop. My favorite sandwich to order here is the Italian, or the Natural. Both come with the Avocado-Mayo Spread, which is fantastic, and the bread on both is always so soft and delicious. While other sandwiches may have more toppings and options these sandwiches are unique in their simplicity. Prices are very reasonable (cash only) and I always enjoy taking a friend or going by myself to read the paper that they provide for you. Don't waste your time at a place like Subway when you can support this local gem.

  • Drew M.

When I was in high school, I had a friend pass away from a freak heart attack, and this was one of his favorite places to go eat, so I've always come here as a personal way of keeping his memory alive and paying homage to his life. That being said, the Lil' Pickle does all the right things to keep me coming back in a completely objective way. The interior feels inviting, you can tell it's not some corporate chain of sandwich shops (though I do get down with them from time to time), and the walls are covered with pictures of local sports teams, showing that this shop has a place in the community. With the way things are going in our destruction of the Mom and Pop in favor of homogenization and cheap Chinese goods, having a place that is connected to the community makes me feel much better about where my money is going. As for the food, of course, the pickle does it's thing in the world, and I dig the shredded cheese, avocado spread, amazingly soft bread, and small, crunchy ice. These are all things that make this place unique, and make me smile.

  • Cass H.

Absolutely my fav sandwich spot! Back in the day I came here on the way home from work every Monday night. The natural sub is always great, but my staple now is a vegetarian with bacon. The avocado spread is out of this world! Service is friendly and quick. Cash only, but there's an ATM inside. If you use the ATM they give you a free soda!

Do yourself a favor and enjoy one of their subs. You won't be disappointed! The original is super!

  • Steven E.

Been coming here for over a decade, the restaurant has that local hole in the wall nostalgic feel to it. The sandwiches have this fresh chewy bread and the deli meat never seems to disappoint! The combination of the avocado spread and cheese just keeps me coming back for more, whenever i have cash in my pocket. (they dont accept credit cards) OH, and they have ORANGE BANG!!!!!!!!

Let me start by saying I have been an avid patron here for some years, and have always loved their sandwiches especially the natural sub. One of the better tasting sandwiches around as all the other reviews can rightly attest to. However, I unfortunately feel the need to write this review to let people know about the cleanliness issues here. I have been noticing them more and more lately and it has gotten to the point where I can no longer eat here. These are issues I have seen on multiple occasions by the same employees who are the regular help here. Let me describe my most recent and last trip here, unless changes are made to resolve these issues. I walk in and am the only customer in the store. There is the guy behind the counter and one woman in the sandwich making area. First thing I notice as I am walking in is the woman playing around with her cell phone. Not necessarily an issue, but as we all know cell phones are not the cleanest items in the world. I go to the counter and order from the guy and pay with cash as that is all they accept. The woman sets her cell phone down on the back counter and immediately begins handling my food and making my sandwich despite there being a sink w/soap a couple feet from where she is standing. She does not put on any gloves nor have I ever seen gloves used here. Mind you at this point I am watching everything going on very intently. Somewhere in the early process of making the sandwich, I see her grab 1 piece of the shredded mozzarella cheese used on all their sandwiches, and proceed to put it in her mouth! Apparently she wanted a snack? I can only imagine. Then she returns to making my sandwich, handling it with her bare unwashed hands that I have already seen both handling her cell phone and putting food directly in her mouth. Once she is finished making the sandwich, she walks over and sets it next to the man who mans the register. Mind you Lil pickle only accepts cash and I handed my cash directly to the man just a minute earlier. He did not wash his hands as I watched him stand around the whole time. He then proceeded to pick up my sandwich with both hands, and set it in the wrapper and wrap it up before giving it to me. Needless to say I was a bit stunned and had no desire to eat this sandwich that had been exposed to: 1. A likely dirty cell phone 2. An employee's mouth 3. The hands of someone who had just been handling cash Call me a germaphobe if you must, but I find this type of food handling unacceptable. So if you could care less about these cleanliness issues, by all means eat here. I think their sandwiches are great and for those who aren't into hand washing etc. this is a very tasty sandwich spot. I personally will not be returning after this experience. However if they would change their operating procedures I would be back here in a heartbeat. My hope in writing this review is that it will not deleted or buried on the last page. Rather that someone in either the health dept. or a manager/owner of lil pickle will read this and make the necessary changes to make this place the great sandwich spot it should be. My goal is just to warn people of the health issues here and let people make up their own mind if they are acceptable for themselves, until changes are hopefully made. P.S. I have this review saved on my computer and if it is removed/deleted I will repost. P.P.S. They charge for extra pickles here... who does that? Especially at a place called little pickle!

I'm not much of a sandwich person and this place is by far the best I have had. Warm bun and made fresh. It's the perfect size for lunch too. They only take cash but when you take $ from ATM they give you a free drink so that works out.

  • Tiffany B.

The prices of these sandwiches make me want to run to Subway, BUT Lil' Pickle has a really good Turkey sandwich & they make it spicy if you want (HECK YES!!! BRING IT ONNNNNNN!). The habanero that they add to your sandwich is right up my lane of the perfect amount of "spicy" I can handle without wanting to chug half a gallon of milk. Their avocado spread is pretty good although I wish they'd use real slices of avocado instead (+4 for Subway. You go, Glen Coco..err..I mean Jared.) Really small shop, would definitely recommend it to anyone who is craving for a really good sandwich, but only if they aren't on a budget. Like I said earlier, Subway has cheaper sandwiches, but this place is really good nevertheless.

I have been going to this place since I was in the womb. I am not surprised that this amazing establishment is still open and that they still use the same glorious ingredients since I was a child. My mom and aunt used to work here when they were in high school. Their very first job since they immigrated to the US (their picture is on the wall by where you pick up your sammiches!). I have always been getting the Turkey with avocado mayo....nothing else. Their bread is steamed and has always always been like that. I htink its the #4? The natural? They take cash only so be prepared. Very small. Very old-school...as the interior has not changed since the day they opened. And they are very fast..so dont worry abouto the lines if you come during lunch. :) GO!

  • Lynne K.

I love the place and eat there frequently. I would go more often if they took credit/debit cards. Even the free drink given if you use the in-store ATM is not worth the $5 (between the ATM fee and my bank fee).

  • Greg B.

The sandwich at the Lil Pickle is very good. I love how the bread is steamed and it tastes so fresh. Also, it is cool how the cheese on the sandwich is shredded mozzarella. This gives it a distinct taste. Make sure you come before Noon, as the line starts to move out the door. Overall, it is a great sandwich and you can't beat the price.

I love pickles! I was coming from work going to school, i was so hungry, and decided to get snacks, saw this place next to the liquor store, and I was like I gotta try this...it has the word pickles in it. So i went in, it was a small little sandwich shop, about 2 people working. got the original sandwich... i thought it was good! the bread was nice and soft, i liked the fact that the cheese wasn't "slices of cheese", instead it was shredded cheese which gave it uniqueness, they didn't put mayo or mustard instead they put Italian dressing. It was delicious (or maybe I was really hungry) either way I'll be coming back! ooh i wish they gave me a whole pickle... instead of a slice of pickle...

  • Mike R.

If you love sandwiches you need to try the lil' pick! The service is a little cold at times hence the 4 stars but the food is great. A lil pricey but the quality is good, portions fair and the avocado spread is a must! If you're around give it a try, but remember...cash only.

I use to frequent this place all the time when I went to OCC. Now that my lil bro is in school here, I took him for a light lunch. The best thing here is the gigantic KOSHER WHOLE PICKLE. Every time we go, we each get a whole pickle and we munch our way through it in conjunction with the sandwich. They're fairly inexpensive [0.97 cents], wonderfully crunchy, and extremely filling. 10" ITALIAN SALAMI sandwich. The sandwich itself is close to $6, which isn't that cheap, but I always share it with someone. I ask oil dressing, Italian dressing, and light mayo to the sandwich as well. [You can opt to have mayo, mustard, dressing, oil, etc]. They have HORCHATA. It's not the greatest horchata, but then this isn't a tacqueria. The place itself is tiny. There are about 5-6 benches that seat 4 people, and about 2 that seat 2 people. I go right before lunch time to avoid the crowds and lines. The walls are adorned with local high school sports teams that Lil' Pickle supports or cater to. Just a homey mom and pop sandwich place.

This is one of those places that always works. I order the Italian sub every time, and every time is tastes even better than the last. The meat, cheese, tomato, lettuce and delicious avocado spread is all I need to make my afternoon brighter. This place is cash only but if you use their ATM you get a free drink. Wonderful sandwiches.

I love this place, best sandwich in Costa Mesa. Get the #4 best sandwich on the menu. You can't go wrong with that killer avocado mayo. Bring your cash and an appetite.

Went here today for lunch - ordered a #4 (The Natural), based on the reviews it got on Yelp. Service was great, the sandwich guy was friendly and helpful. Took about 3 to 5 minutes for my order to be completed - that's decent for a sandwich place. First and foremost : the bread. YUM. Wow. I love soft, chewy and fresh tasting bread. Softest sandwich I've had in a long time... so thats good. I like how the cheese is crumbled and sprinkled on the sandwich versus actual slices. I know some people might think it doesn't make a difference - but it does. The avocado spread... tasted more like mayonnaise than avocado, but that's fine I guess. I didn't have any big issues with that. My soda had that weird chlorinated hint to it. I guess its a Socal thing since this isn't the only place I've experienced that. Overall a good sandwich place- especially considering the low price! A junior (6in) will run you about $4.50 and a regular (10in) is about a dollar more. Cash only - but they do have a ATM ($2 surcharge). Plenty of parking, good amount of tables inside and outside. I'll probably return and try out some of the other sandwiches they have.

WOW! This is my new favorite Sandwich Shop. I ordered the Lil Pickle sub, ohhhh....it was absolutely delicious. I ate every last crumb! The bread was super soft and warm melt in my mouth... The veggies were fresh and the sauce was just right, not dry and not soggy just perfect. We also ordered the veggie and tuna, both were fantastic. Great locals hang out. The place was busy with many customers. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity. The place is family owned and has great personality and service. Our server Rudy was super friendly. Lil Pickle accept cash only, but they do have an ATM inside and if you use it, then you get a free drink :)

I had to come to Irvine for business a few weeks ago and decided to try Lil Pickle on a whim after getting gas nearby. I didn't expect much from the outside, but after trying their sandwich I can see why they get so many good reviews on here. As other reviewers have mentioned, their sandwiches aren't extravagant, but they do what they do very well. I got the Natural, which had turkey, avocado, and cheese on it. For something so simple, it was really good. The avocado spread was great, and I don't know what it is about it but the bread really makes the sandwich. The only downside to the place is the fact that they are cash only, so you have to use the ATM inside the store, though you do get a free drink when you use it. I'll definitely keep coming here whenever I'm in the area

Inflation sucks. Sandwiches are now $6.10 for a large. However, I don't blame Lil' Pickle for that. It's still my favorite mom & pop style sandwich place in OC. I will usually go here after going to the South Coast Metro 24-Hour Fitness. I don't like their chip selection so I usually go next door to the liquor store and grab some Doritos. The Famous, Italian and Tuna are still my favorites and I love their avocado spread. I think if I could change anything about their sandwiches, I would prefer sliced cheese instead of the shredded Parmesan they use.

  • Chims C.

Lil' Pickle is awesome. I love the Famous sub with the avocado mayonnaise. I frequented it often while I was attending Orange Coast College. Sometimes, I'd read The Brothers Karmazov outside, eating my sub, waiting for a beautiful, intellectual sandwich lover to come steal my heart. That never happened, but I still enjoyed the sandwich. The service here is good, and the owner seems like a nice man. He once said my Bob Dylan shirt was cool. He told me he watched him at the OC Fairgrounds. The only problem with this is place is that it takes cash only. I was going to give this 4 stars but decided that I'm in a good mood and craving one a sandwich.

Something about the bread they use here is different in an amazing way. I literally find myself salivating over imagining the texture of the bread in my head. Their sandwiches are very simple, but addictive. Which is really saying something about a simple sandwich! Their prices are pretty good as well, typically a little less than 6 bucks for a ten inch and a little less than 5 for a 6 inch.

  • Lynn C.

Cash only. But I would not let that hold me back form going back! Good sandwich shop.

    (4)
  • Anthony S.

They should call this place Lil' Crackle because the sandwiches are that addicting. The buns are super soft and the shredded cheese and the OLD school photos on the wall of your uncle Earl when he was the bees knees on the 1979 Costa Mesa High Track team are all just part of goodness. Enjoy it.

Um, hi this place is the BUSINNESSSS. I don't give five stars to places, especially casual eateries, period. But I've got to say this is some phenomenal stuff. We got the turkey and avocado with the avocado spread, holy cow that is great. I don't know, their bread has the best texture and flavor that you would be satisfied eating a la carte. Best part? Prices are low. Oh yeah, bring cash and this is a hole in the wall. Just freaking go here, man.

I *LOVE* Lil' Pickle. I've been coming here my entire life, and it's safe to say this is hands down my favorite turkey sandwich of all time. It's a Costa Mesa tradition... if you live there, you go there. If you lived there, you will make a point to come back here. There are pictures of local school sports teams on the wall thanking Jim for the sponsorship, dating back to the early 1980s... it's just an awesome place. Go there, you won't regret it :)

  • Bill E.

By FAR my favorite sandwich place in Costa Mesa. My wife and I love eating here. Even though we don't live as close now, we still drive up from Lake Forest frequently for her to get her favorite sandwich... The Jr. #4!

  • Lauren B.

I love this place! I prefer sandwiches with soft bread and thats exactly how they do it here. The #1 is the best if you ask me. They only take cash BUT they have an ATM in the back of the store and if you tell them that you used the ATM they give you a free drink to make up for the ATM fee, how awesome is that?! Their food is good to eat there or to-go. Highly recommend.

  • Elton W.

I got a turkey sub. I think that was a bad choice, but I wanted to try the sauce everyone raves about. The meats were not cold (room temperature instead), thus making it a rather subpar turkey sandwich that didn't really have much flavor ("The Natural" ). Would not come back.

Currently on a vegetarian diet and this place sure hit the spot. I went with an egg salad sandwich which was perfect on the perfect soft bread that came along with it. I did have to salt my sandwich a tad but with a quick dash it was delightful. Their bread is made in the shop so you can guarantee the freshness of it. ( I didn't see any other bread selections - but i've still no complaints) Le boyfriend had the forty niner and was brave enough to add the super spicy habanero and i really have no idea how he was able to hang. He ate it like a champ so im assuming The service was real quick so if you're on a rush and want to get in and out this might be faster than subway. They DON'T accept cards but if you use the atm thats located in the back of the shop they'll hook you up with a free drink! Reasonable in my opinion.

  • Annabelle K.

I tried the #7 with roast beef, salami, avocado spread, tomato, lettuce, cheese and peppers... delish! The french bread is soft yet chewy, all the meats taste fresh and delicious and this is after the sandwich had been sitting in the car for about an hour. Definitely prefer this place over chains like Subway, Quizno's or Togo's. Now I want to go back just to try "The Natural" :) What sets this place apart is the mom and pop atmosphere, the bread and the fact that they support local sports.

  • Carol J.

I've gone to this place for years! I love their subs. I always get the #4 which is a turkey samo on a wheat roll with a magical spread of mayo and avocado. The place isn't fancy, but the food is great. Every sandwich comes with a pickle wedge, but you can buy a mondo pickle too. The prices are good. And the whole place is covered with Costa Mesa's sports teams that the resturant has sponsored throughout the years. Football stars, soccer teams, even a school choir was supported by this place! I found my sisters pop warner cheer team photo from the 90's in there! What a cool way to honor the city that supports your business. The place is clean and the booths seat up to 4 people comfortably. I wouldn't plan on a huge group since the place is small. Bring cash!

  • Kris G.

LOCAL FAVORITE!! You know it's good when there are more people here during lunch than there are at Subway across the street!! People who come here have been repeat offenders for YEARS! I have been a loyal customer since 1994 and I introduce as many people as I can to this amazing joint. The owner is usually found behind the cash register, making sure that everyone is happy. TIPS: Bring CASH WITH YOU! They don't take cards and the ATM machine charges you like 2 or 3 bucks on top of what your bank charges you.... so, bring a $20 so you can get some kettle chips and and Orange Bang! Happy eating, friends!!

I've been going to this place since I was in 5th grade. 18 years later, and the place is still going strong. This place is a mom and pop type of sandwich shop. The bread is nice and chewy. The meat and veggies are all fresh and sliced to perfection. I normally order either the Natural or club. Compared to all the other sub shops around, this is hands down the best in terms of taste and value. Oh almost forgot, don't forget to add the sliced habanero peppers for a nice spicy kick. If you haven't tried this place out yet, then you need to get movin!!!

If you live in the area you owe it to yourself to try this place. I like everything about it. The people are very nice, the sandwiches are delicious and the place is clean. I just picked up some Italian sandwiches for myself and my co-workers. They were a hit and everyone I've told about this place has nothing but nice things to say about it. A real gem, you will not be disappointed!

First time here. Tried the No. 4. Very fresh ingredients. The bread is very good. Seems to be a family owned shop, and everyone is very friendly, and the service was fast! I will definitely come here again, even though they seem to give money to all my son's competitors from HS BBall.

Surprisingly good!!! Will go back and keep going back! The bread was warm soft and fresh. The sandwiches are made quickly! And the portions were perfect!!! Great find!

  • Lan N.

CASH ONLY. It must be the bread that keeps me coming back. Bread to meat to lettuce to shredded cheese ratio. They got it down. I think they may even make their own pickles to accompany your sandwich. It just has this homemade taste to it. In a good way of course.

    (5)
  • Heather R.

Best sub rolls I've ever had! I get the #2 club every time, but everything on the menu looks great. They only have mozzarella, which I was skeptical about on my first visit, but it's really great with the meat and the warm rolls. I'd say it's just about the perfect sandwich. Note that it's cash only, but if you use their atm... you can get a free soda.

I have decided to stick to the short and to the point review system. Ok, ok I'm just lazy! One Star is for their bread....really, really good...I bet you its made with a lot of butter! Minus One Star for the amount of meat they put in a sandwich....really, that's it?? Like the old lady in the Burger King commercial said...where's the beef?? One Star for their prices....woohoo didn't break the bank for a decent sized sandwich! One Star for being a mom & pop type of place...you go non-franchised place!! Minus One Star for service...why ask what we want or not want in the darn sandwich if you won't even listen!!??? What's going on with the customer service nowadays? If you hate your job just quit...trust me there are plenty of people out a job out there who would be more than happy to get your job.

    Decided to try an unconventional sandwich here, since it seems everyone gets the club sandwich or some variation of it. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and was thoroughly disappointed. There was hardly any chicken in my sandwich, and it was loaded with dressing. The bread didn't taste fresh either, which is sad for such a packed place. I don't know if I'll come back, but if I do get dragged over here, I'll just stick with what everyone else orders. (-_- );;

Came here feeling hungry but wanting something healthy in me. First thing I noticed was the decor. Small and a wall infested with photos. I thought "definitely a mom and pop shop." I got the Lil Pickle Original Sub at the regular 10" and that's $5.52 not including tax. Much more when comparing between bigger known alternatives such as Subway and Quiznos' with the former opening soon and latter located extremely close. That's not to say the sandwich wasn't good. The bread was warm and fluffy you could easily taste the delicious butter. Ingredients were light and tasted fresh. But it just came together as a sandwich. Not amazing, not brilliant, just good. The pickle on the side was great however. Not too sour. Definitely a small place but a nice place. They are great people who constantly donate money to local schools in the area to various groups( such as cheer, basketball, etc) and definitely a great place for them to go but as to the ordinary person I had trouble justifying the price.

Lil' Pickle is a great place to go when you are craving a tasty sub sandwich but would like a departure from the overabundance of sub chains. It's a neighborhood sandwich shop located in a small plaza off the corner of Fairview and Baker. The service here has always been pleasant and friendly. It's very pleasing to go to an establishment where people seem genuinely happy to be there. In my opinion, I think the big draw to Lil' Pickle has to be the bread that they use. Unlike other breads used in subway sandwiches, the bread here is soft, chewy and free from that stale taste of mass production. I particularly love that the doughy texture of the bread soaks in all the flavors perfectly. There are many different items on the menu but my regular sub of choice would have to be the 40 niner. The combination of turkey, capicolla, ham, cheese and mayo creates a delightfully flavorful taste. It tastes filling but still manages to be light. The signature Lil' Pickle sub is also quite tasty. All sandwiches come with a pickle to munch on. Average price for a sandwich ranges anywhere between $4-7.

  • Sarah W.

Cash only, I always get the Italian sub... lots of flavor and compliments the delicious bread... was really sad when I moved away so I can no longer stop in on my way home from work. Good prices, friendly staff and a few tables to relax and eat outside. I really am going to miss this place.

I am a regular at this place. Their sandwiches are my favorite! I have been going here since my freshman year in college and they are always pretty nice here. They are just a small little family sandwich place and they are always willing to customize your orders. A number 7 with habanero is the best!

Mmmm Lil' Pickle... I'm currently eating my second half of the #4 LOCATION: Fairview and Baker, literally a block away from OCC. I'm sad that I only discovered this after my 2 years at OCC or else I would've spent manyyyy lunches here. ATMOSPHERE: Feels very family owned (I'm not sure if it is or not) and the pictures of all the high school sports teams that they support shows that they LOVE their customers. The place isn't very big, it's more of a take out place or somewhere to have lunch with a couple friends. SERVICE: They clearly care about their customers and the quality of each and every sandwich. The sandwiches come out quick! The same guy seems to be at the cashier every time I'm there and he's always super helpful. FOOD: Probably the best sandwich place I've ever been to. Like all the other Yelp reviews say... BEST BREAD EVER. It's hard to describe... It's like chewy on the inside and has the best texture. The lettuce, cheese, and meat always seem to be perfectly placed and I like how it's kind of squished together. SO YUMMY!! I always get the #4 which they say is their original (turkey, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes). It comes with avocado mayo that's super good, if your sandwich doesn't have it then add it!! And I love how you get half of a pickle alongside your sandwich. I usually get the regular 10" size, which fills me up and I usually save the second half for later. The sandwich is a little over $5 but the only negative is that they don't accept card. The ATM machine takes $2 to use so be aware! Every ATM does this (unless its your bank ATM) so don't hate on them for that. AnywaysI haven't tried anything but the sandwiches but I'm sure the rest of the food is delicious as well. This place is the shit. WAY better than subway... the bread just gets me every time. This is a bold statement but I feel like this is on the same level as Bay Cities Deli in Santa Monica (Yelpers don't yell at me for that). Again, this is my favorite sandwich place. Close, local, cheap, yummy. All I need in my life.

  • Lisa M.

I know that the sandwiches aren't outstanding or gourmet at all, and the avocado spread is just green mayonnaise, but I love this place and I eat lunch here all the time. They have good bread, good prices, and I like the atmosphere.

    (4)
  • Laurence R.

Great lunch spot. Everything you'd want out of a sandwich. Nothing fancy about it, just great taste, made right to order. Bread is always unbelievably soft and fresh. And yes, the pickle is the ultimate sidekick. Nomz: #4 turkey w/ avocada mayo, tuna, chicken salad,.. really they're all great. CASH ONLY... they have an atm inside, show them your receipt and get any sized drink of your choice.

    (4)
  • Nate T.

Stop reading these reviews and go eat it. It's SUPER good. Soft chewy bread, avocado spread, fresh meats grated cheese and lettuce. Seriously, just go.

  • Brandon M.

This place has off the charts consistently the best 100% all beef kosher hot dogs. I get mine with tomatoes, onions, pickles and mustard. They serve it in a nice toasty warm bun which with the all beef hot dog makes for the finest quality hot dog around. Trust me. The tuna salad sandwich is my favorite sandwich of theirs but I've also had the Club Sub and both the Italian meat sandwiches which were really really awesome. I just like the hot dogs and tuna the best so I usually get either of those.

    (5)
  • Amy C.

This is probably the best place I have found in Costa Mesa to get a sandwich! I would recommend the #4... the avocado spread is amazing! And you can't forget the pickle on the side... delicious! The only bummer about Lil Pickle is that it's "cash only"! However, I recently found LiveOnTheGo.com which let me pay with my credit card online, and by the time I got to the Lil Pickle (10 min earlier than when the site said my sandwich would be ready), my sandwich was happily waiting for me. I just had to tell them my name, then i could grab and go! Great for my busy work schedule when i just need to step out to grab a quick bite!

  • Joey R.

I absolutely love this place. I was introduced about a year ago, and I've been going back ever since. For my money, it's hard to find another sub place that's even remotely as good as lil' pickle. What I like about the way they make their subs, is that they don't skip out on anything. If you order a turkey sub, they load it with turkey. If you want tomatoes, they load it with tomatoes. Unlike some sub places who give you the bare minimum, lil' pickle definitely gives you your money's worth, and then some. Really, I could sit and rave about this place all day. I've yet to try one thing on the menu that I didn't like, and I seriously doubt one even exists. If you're looking for an awesome sub that will leave you wanting more (in a good way) - this is your place.

great sandwiches! served to you on warm bread. There's a ton of variety in their menu - so there should be something you can find that you'll dig. they also have a tasty avocado mayo spread - it is pretty delicious. I almost always get the #7 with onions - "Famous" sub - roast beef and dry salami and the above-mentioned spread. heaps of shredded mozzarella and lettuce and tomato. Comes with a pickle slice. That's the Lil' Pickle! Cash only!

This is not a "sundried tomato pesto on italian herbed focaccia sandwich" froo-froo kind of place. This is a back-to-basics, "simplicity at it's finest" kind of place. I tried "The Natural" by suggestion of the owner. It was on a warm, soft wheat roll that I just loved! Such a departure from your typical cut-the-roof-of-your-mouth french baguette. It came with turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded mozzarella, and avocado/mayo spread. The veggies were fresh and the mozzarella was something a little different from my usual. It was simple, and I loved every bite of it! It's a breath of fresh air to get a sandwich in OC from a place that isn't a chain restaurant. I would definitely go back! *Also, they do NOT take credit, but DO take checks and cash. If you use their in-store ATM machine, they give you a free drink. Pretty cool!

    (4)
  • Kevin W.

I've ordered the Natural to see what all the hype was about. Unfortunately, it didn't tickle my pickle. The bread didn't taste like it was fresh, but like it was left out to harden. The meat was just ok, but what I didn't like was that my sandwich tasted soggy (maybe due to the avo spread?) and tasted like it was drenched in that stuff. Maybe I'll try this place again and am hoping I caught them on a bad day, but as for lunch, it's not a bad deal. Go support your local mom and pop shops!

  • Mai P.

Love hoagies and subs? Lil' pickle will not fail you. Tucked next to a gas station and offering plenty of off-street parking, Lil' pickle offers a handful of menu sandwiches. My favorite is the supreme. The avocado spread is divine!! The primo meat melts in your mouth. Perfect for lunch before driving down to the beach! Upgrading from regular to large does not increase the size of the sandwich but increases the amount of meat. Cash only!!

    (4)
  • Jason M.

I've driven by this place my whole life and never ate there until about 4 months ago because it looked kind of divey. I've been missing out! There sandwiches are beyond delicious. They have the perfect distribution of meat, lettuce. bread and other condiments. I get bacon on every sandwich because it isn't that stringy crap you get at other sandwich shops. It's crispy goodness. I can't even put into words how perfect their fresh bread is. It's got the slightest crunch on the outside, but perfect doughiness (if that's even a word) on the inside. Every time I eat here I kick myself because I didn't come here earlier in my life to enjoy the shit out of these sandwiches. What the hell was I thinking?

    (5)
  • BJ L.

This place really is about consistency. Like Al said, they've been making their sandwiches with the same consistent quality since the 80's. I just returned from a visit getting 'The Natural' (double meat) and was glad to find that the avocado spread is the same as it has always been - mostly mayo with a little bit of avocado puree. And as much as I hate places that are cash only and charge you up the wazoo to use their ATM - at least Lil' Pickle gives you a free drink out of the deal.

    (4)
  • Michellea D.

The bread is really good as is the avacado spread. The meats were just like you get at Subway. One nouch above Subway. I do like the shredded cheese. Good sandwich, but not great. I do like the price. $7 for chips, 6" sandwich and a drink. They lost a star because they DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS (or Debit cards)...Must have CASH. I got the Traditional and my friend got the Italian. We liked the Italian better then the Traditional.

    (3)
  • Kevin R.

I hadn't been to the Lil' Pickle in 9 years when I recently went back. I found nothing had changed, not the menu, not the cash-only policy, and not the taste of the Italian sub (my favorite). The lack of change may explain why the sandwich shop has been so steadily popular for 50 years. Do I wish the avocado spread tasted more like avocado than mayo? Sure. But is that likely going to happen soon? Probably not. Long live the Pickle.

If you want a good sandwich from a family owned place that isn't Subway or Quiznos, this is the shop for you. This place is across the street from Stater Brothers and next to a liquor store. Be warned, this place is very "mom and pop." A lot of kids work there and sometimes, kids can get caught up in their own drama. But the food has always been good. I think the sandwiches are messy and are really good with a bag of chips. I always get the grinder and my girlfriend gets the healthy sub. We recommend them both. Skip buying a drink there unless you have to use the ATM (you'll get a free drink if you use their ATM, but it charges $2 for the transaction.). Pick up your drink at the liquor store next door.

    (3)

This is a good sandwich place if you wanna grab a quick bite. Quick & friendly. If you use their ATM ($2 charge), you get a free drink, any size you want!

  • No B.

Been going here since 1980 - Consistently the best quality sub sandwich available in the OC for the money. You will get exactly what you ordered, the same each time. No, the bread is not an 'Artisan' loaf baked in brick ovens by some TV Personality from NY in a retrofitted Fire station in LA. The loaf is a wonderful soft and slightly doughy bread that is the signature of the Lil' Pickle...along with the slice of pickle you get with every sub or sandwich. The bottom line is that the Lil' Pickle is an OC Institution. Like Johnny's Pastrami in Culver City or Pinks Hot Dogs in LA. Most like it, some don't. Try it. But go in with an open mind - It's not Bistro 666 in CDM...It's a Friggin' Sub shop in Costa Mesa....that's been there a really long time.

New favorite sandwich place! I had the #1 and it was really yummy! They were super friendly and sandwiches were made so quick!

  • Alisha T.

Oh my goodness this place is SO GOOD. My friend introduced this place to me and if I'm in the area, I can't resist stopping by and getting a sandwich. I don't know what it is about their sandwiches, but they combine everything in just the right way and it's freakin' delicious. Go try this place out! You won't regret it... unless you didn't bring cash, in which case you'll get charged $2 to use the ATM machine. BUT you get a free drink, so it kind of works out.

  • Ivy N.

I ordered the natural sub which has avocado spread, turkey, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle on wheat roll. I think this is my 2nd time here and I've lived in oc area all my life. I didn't really care for the sandwich. The wheat roll was soft but I didn't like the taste of the turkey sandwich. I don't think I will be coming back any time soon.

One of the biggest surprises i've had in a long time. A co-worker took us over here and we weren't expecting much, but what a great surprise! I got The Natural with Habeneros, man what a great sandwich, i've been craving to go back. The avocado spread was fantastic, the bread was fresh and tasted great. I love spicey things, so when the opportunity came to get some habenero's in a sandwich I jumped at it. I highly recommend this place!

Lil' Pickle, a very cute and friendly lil neighborhood Deli! A nice alternative to Subway or any other one of those commercial chains. Take a walk down the history of Costa Mesa community! Craving burgers, I looked up burgers on yelp in costa mesa area. I ran across the name of this place, and said why not!? so I went down here, and decided that this place is actually for sandwiches. So I got a sub! Lil Pickle Sandwich, with ham, salami, cheese and oil dressing. When I first saw oil dressing I was like wha? that is weird, but decided to still try it out, and i am glad I did. The oil dressing was very refreshing and the whole combo had a nice balance of flavor. The french bread roll was so warm and soft! Since I was starving, I decided to throw in an order of Macaroni salad. It turns out that I never finished the salad because the portion of the sandwich was pretty large. The only downside was, why can't you take debit cards!? Since I was out of cash, I actually had to use the ATM machine located inside, paying 2 bucks. I was just too hungry. I had no more strength to go to a bank to save my two bucks. They do give you a free drink, tho, if you use the ATM. The total for the sandwich and a medium mac salad was 7 something. The price ain't too bad for a quick fix lunch. It really is a cozy lil neighborhood deli. You see mom and babies, high school students, college students, business people, and on and on. I think this deli also supports lots of community activities and schools. It's been around since 1963? To be doing biz in the same place for a long time, you have to find a way to support the community that you are in, and this place seems like it's def taking its responsibilities to be a part of the community.

Lil' Pickle is a place you hope is that little gem--but it is more like a sore throat. First went probably a decade ago and have been various times with different friends who keep insisting that "It is probably a good lil' shop to have a nice sandwich..." Its just not folks. Sorry. From a basic cold cut, to the veggie--never had anything that made me want to return.

Lil' Pickle has the best sandwiches in Costa Mesa ~ i've been a customer for well over 25 yrs. They know my order is always the #2 with no mayo without question each & every time .. kudos to Lil Pickle!

    (5)
  • Mike K.

I've been eating Lil' Pickle's #1 since I was a child; my dad used to bring them home after work, wrapped in the classic Lil' Pickle paper (no longer used) in a brown bag. The sandwiches were way better back in the day, but they are still my favorite sub, hands-down. I love the bread, and the mozzarella is perfect. The pasta salads are mediocre, but go well with the sandwiches -- as do the mini-Martinelli's! My sister likes the meatball sandwich as well as the natural. My dad and I rep the #1, the only way to go! Go!

So as not to confuse the two "pickle" sandwich shops that are fairly close to one another, this is most definitely the lesser of the two. The other is Mr. Pickles (the nearby one is in Huntington Beach). As far as quality and taste, Lil' Pickle USA leaves a lot to be desired. The bread is much more chewy than savory. The much touted avocado spread is not as good as I had hoped, considering that it's practically all mayo. And since it is much touted, they really slather it on, so you had better like mayo. And the meat and fixings are just average. I don't think they did much wrong, so I'm remiss to give 2 stars here, but I'm close...let's call it 2.5. I like local spots, but this one's sandwiches have a quality akin to Subway, so it's not really worth my time other than supporting a local establishment. In short, nothing really wrong here but not my first choice. At least they live up to their name because I really liked the pickle I got with my sandwich.

  • Benji B.

Awesome!!! Lil' Pickle USA has a very unique approach to Deli sandwiches... Aside from the perfect amount of meat, cheese and lettuce they steam their baked fresh bread to give their sandwiches a warm soft texture that takes it to a whole new level... Quizno's and Subway should shut down their Costa Mesa locations!... Lil' Pickle all the way!!!

I used to love this place. In Fact, it was a regular stop for me and my friend when I was in college. Then life came at me, i moved away, I made new friends etc. Then one day I was in the neighborhood and felt like a sandwich... Lil' Pickle!! This place used to have the best subs around town, now they are charging for extra meat? Oh wait, maybe they always have- I just never noticed because their regular sandwiches always had enough meat? Not so anymore. Maybe it's just a sign of our times that all good things must come to an end and we are just going to have to get used to getting alot less, whilst paying little more. Either way I may still come back for nostalgic reasons, or if someone dropped me off in this plaza and I was down to my last 7 dollars, was starving and had no ride home...

I just went here and got #4. Good stuff. But the buns weren't hot or soft.. it was cold and quite flattened.. i dont think the bread have lost heat completely during 10 mins of driving home but anyways.. its good! Im tired of subway etc so ill be coming here now. Very friendly people working there.

  • Ryan B.

I've been coming here since my college days. When i am driving by on the 405 for work I try to time it for lunch so that i can stop by and have a Natural Sub. One of the best around. Great bread, shredded cheese, and a unique avocado spread. Those are the reasons their sandwiches are so great. Also love looking at some of the old OCC and Costa Mesa sports pics on the wall.

    (5)
  • Lisa B.

i've eaten here several times and didn't really enjoy it. The meatball sub is bland to me. I think they put too much mayo in the tuna sandwich and the tuna salad is like the tuna sub minus the bread. The potato and macaroni salad is also bland. The only thing good there is the pickle.

    (2)
  • James S.

It's a little hole in the wall place with great sandwiches. They don't accept credit cards but if you use the atm in there they give you a free drink. The bread and ingredients are fresh. And they give you a little pickle, but that's a given.

    (5)
  • Austin T.

This is one of the last places you can get a decent sandwich. they are fresh and just can taste the quality of there ingredients. There really not much else to say, go there and the sandwich will speak for it self.

    (4)
  • Stephanie G.

i got the italian sub and it ruled!! the avocado mayo spread on their warm, chewy, perfect bread was honestly made it the best sammy ever!!! i also got a side a potato salad that was alright... nothing special. cash only which is STUPID; its 2010 people!! although if you use their atm they give you a free drink. whoooopiiieee. 15 doll hairs for 2 subs 2 drinks and side of potato salad!

I've been coming here for well over 30 years. The food is fresh and the quality is consistently good. Everything on the menu ranges from good to very good and their stand out sandwich is their #4 Natural which is turkey on wheat roll with their excellent avocado spread. Still the same as it was in 1979. The service has always been fast and friendly. I highly recommend the Lil Pickle to anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

    (4)
  • Andrew D.

I ordered a number 4, Natural Turkey Sandwich. The best part of the sandwich is the bread. Otherwise it's nothing too exciting. The avocado spread, which is described as avocado and mayo, seems to be 95% mayo. It's cheap, quick, and not bad tasting. I would suggest just buying the bread and making your own sandwich.

    (3)
  • Jon B.

I always order the super junior #1, which fills me up. Cash only but there is an ATM present where you can take out cash and use your receipt from the transaction to get a free drink which is awesome!

    (4)
  • James L.

There's nothing like a hole-in-the-wall local independent sandwich shop situated near a college. There isn't anything I didn't like here. Just make sure you have cash because that's all they accept.

    (5)
  • Diwata P.

Quality ingredients for a very delicious sandwich. I can't believe something so simple can be so good here.

    (4)
  • Alicia L.

Having sandwiches for my lunch break is not really an exciting prospect, but I had heard good things about this place. I got the "natural" sandwich, which is basically turkey on wheat-ish with an "avocado" spread. Sabrina I. is right, it's basically just green mayo. Something about the sandwich though...again, I sort of avoid sandwich places as a result of a misguided diet strategy about carbs and the lack of fun factor for my hour-long lunch break, but the next day I woke up wanting another sub from Lil' Pickle. Weird. That must mean it's pretty good. Or there's crack in the green mayo.

    (4)
  • Sabrina I.

I ordered the Lil' Pickle sandwich and Mr. I. got the Turkey with Avocado Spread. The avocado spread was described by Mr. I as green colored mayonnaise that didn't really taste like avocado. The rolls on both of our subs, grinders, whatever you want to call them - had those generic looking dots on the bottom. The same mass produced rolls you can get in a plastic bag at any grocery store. The italian dressing was as good as italian dressing on a sandwich should be straight out the gate. The shredded mozzarrella cheese, lettuce and tomatoes on both of our sandwiches were pretty fresh. The meat tasted only slightly less rubbery than that of Subway. I had the salami and ham. Gave the mortadella to Mr. I. He ate all of that but didn't bother to finish his turkey sub. All of the local sports penants and team photos posted in here seem to be from 2000 and earlier. So either the owner ran out of room to post new pics or he has stopped sponsoring teams like he used to. The strip mall this place is in is pretty depressed looking, so I doubt they are making the kind of money needed to keep sponsoring sports teams. According to Mr. I., the pickle was good.

A neighborhood deli since 1962. I had recently heard about this place, and while driving to an appt. I saw it, so stopped for dinner afterwards. Had the lil' pickle sandwich. It was good, great soft bread, and fresh produce. My wife had the turkey Avocado on wheat, and couldn't stop talking about how good the bread was. I thought it was fairly priced, as compared to a large at TOGOS. If you want $5 subs, go to subway, but remember you get what you pay for. I will go back if I am in the hood again.

  • Brian T.

2 months ago I would have given this place only 3 stars, but because of their recent addition of adding habanero peppers to the sandwiches (upon request), I must give them a happy four stars! During law school, I lived on these sandwiches. It was close to my school and they are pretty cheap. For basically $5 you can get a decent sized sandwich that will fill you up. I personally enjoy the standard Little Pickle house sandwich but I find the other ones to be just as tasty. If you like mom and pop sandwich places and little restaurants that support local sports, then this is your place! I'd eat here over any chain sandwich place any day. Besides Henry's, I think Little Pickle is one of the better sandwich places in Costa Mesa. It is located on Baker and Fairview next to the Shell gas station. Cheers! - The Tranimal

  • Jun G.

Love the sandwiches here. The bread they use is probably the best part of the sandwiches. They have great sandwiches that come with a side of pickle. Only minor problem is cash only. They have an atm machine and if you use it you get a free drink. I'd go here again. I think I go here enough where they know my order already. If you're a sandwich lover I definitely recommend going.

  • Dustin L.

Lil' Pickle has the best sandwiches in Costa Mesa. The bread is super soft and usually warm, the portions of meat are generous, and every sandwich is wrapped up in butcher paper with a lil' pickle. I've personally had the turkey and pastrami and thoroughly enjoyed both. The walls are covered in pictures of sports teams that have been sponsored by Lil' Pickle. And if you look close enough you can find a picture of Jack Black when he used to work here.

Its been almost 20 years between visits, that's how long this place has been there, even longer! Wow, this place hasn't changed one bit, in every sense! In general it's a good little mom & pop sandwich shop that has decent sandwiches with really good soft, warm rolls! Obviously has a loyal fan base hence all the 4 & 5 star reviews, which I understand if you really love a place but for me its just OK. I would grab a sandwich from here any day over any chain shop, they could be a little more generous with the meat as its more bread and goodies though. Tickle your pickle!

  • Szu L.

Located in a strip mall off of Fairview Rd. this is one of the best mom and pop sandwich shops in the area. I usually get the Lil' Pickle original which is a cold Italian sub with a delicious sauce with a kick. The sandwiches are about a foot long and come with a lil' pickle. The service is great too. Everyone is super friendly and helpful!!

I'm starting to love this place more and more. I love the #6. What I really like is the sandwiches are made super fast. It's a bit of a drive from work but if I'm a hurry I know I can stop there and get in and out of there real quick. highly recommended.

i drive all the way up from san clemente over 30 miles to get there lil pickle club sandwich!! it is soooo good. i highly recomend coing there. it blows away any other sandwich shop and its the freshest ingrediants made fresh for you. my dad introduced it to me because his dad used to take him there when he was young. its a mother and father sandwich shop.. give it a try you will not be let down

the only thing i actually liked about this place is the bread, it was warm and tasted freshly baked. the really skimp on the meats, pack on the veggies to make the sandwich look filling. i had some type of avocado spread on my sandwich, didnt taste it or notice it at all, yes it lacked that much flavor. the cheese wasnt even memorable. to say the least, subway is better than this place, except the bread here.

I love to support small businesses, especially ones that support local communities like this one seems too. My boyfriend took me here and although it was reminiscent for him and fun for me to watch him point himself out, 20 years younger, on high school team pictures posted on the walls, the food left me a little disappointed. It wasn't just my picky taste (I am a sandwich connoisseur), my boyfriend said he remembered it being better. We split a standard turkey sandwich. The turkey seemed about the quality of packaged of lunch meat from any grocery market and the veggies were not abundant. I think we only had 2 tomato slices on the whole sandwich and even the shredded lettuce seemed a little skimpy. I'm not sure how I feel about the avocado spread. What exactly is it? I would prefer slices of avocado. Sure, they earn major points for the small town mom and pop feel but I won't be rushing back for another meal.

About 10 years ago I used to work just down the street and would eat at Lil' Pickle about once every two weeks. It was good then. And its still good. Driving around Costa Mesa today I needed to feed my hunger. I found myself on Fairview and remembered Lil' Pickle. We stopped in and had a quick meal that was fresh and tasty. The service was exemplary. I'm glad I remembered this place and next time I'm hungry and in the area I'll be stopping by.

The subs are that of what a mom would make their child take to school, by the time the kid eats it, it has become soggy and somewhat taste-less (except for the overpowering taste of mayo and mustard that has soaked into the bread and is now dripping out of the sides). The "Italian" sub is one of the more popular subs and is a notch above subway's "Italian BMT." I don't recommend the "Meatball" as their sauce is more of a weak, watery tomato sauce, than a marinara. One thing that does give this sandwich place an extra star is their extremely soft bread. The popularity of Lil' Pickle USA stems more from its location, near OCC, and less from taste. As for value, you get what you paid for, with a regular sub costing around $6. They only accept Cash or Check as a form of payment and if you withdraw from their ATM (for a $2 fee) then show them the receipt, they give you a free drink (any size). Seating is limited, and they do have outdoor seating which allows for bringing your puppy pal along. Overall it's a "Ok" place to stop if you're in the area, but nothing I would go out of my way for.

i love the natural! its wheat bread, turkey, mozzerella cheese, and the yummy avocado spread! plus its closeby to school so very convienant for me!

I was expecting more after reading all the great reviews. I had the Natural. Maybe it was because I ordered to go that I didnt get what the fuss was all about. However, the pickle was good indeed. Got a small side of the potato salad and mac salad--neither of which was life changing. Better than the chains for sure, will try again and eat there :)

BEST BREAD EVER! Slightly chewy with a firm texture and always a little warm. I have been coming here for years and the service and quality is always amazing. The staff is very friendly and always remembers me. i am so sad that i now live a few cities away but every time i am in the area i make sure to stop by and have a sandwich.

  • Cayleen O.

They serve the only decent tasting sandwiches in the area. Forget your Subways ok? Breads are made fresh daily, the vegetables (lettuce tomato) are fresh and haven't been sitting out like most Subway veggies are, and the avocado spread and italian dressing is BOMB DIGGITY. I'd normally order a grinder cause I love me some meat. Granted the sandwiches aren't stuffed with ingredients they're mighty tasty and you don't feel heavy after shoveling one of those bad boys down. Yum. Oh and it doesn't hurt that it's not a franchise either. It's family owned and they proudly sponsor a lot of the local sports teams in the area. Who wouldn't want to patronize a place like this huh?

  • Heina D.

I would not rank the classic sammich I had here as the best I had, but it definitely trumps Subway/Quizno's/etc., and the pricing isn't terrible. I really want to to try the avocado spread sometimes.

My all time favorite sandwich place. If you like sandwich's go here and you will love them! I recommend this place to all my friends. I wish they had one where I live now! The Italian sub was my all time favorite. The avocado mayo is fantastic. It's small inside but I like the atmosphere. They keep it clean too. =)

maybe i chose the wrong sandwich or something, but this was the WORST sandwich place I've ever been to. The seat were sticky, and the place was small. the employees were super nice. But we heard a lot about this place, and decided to try it out. We got the grinder and the italian. both horrible. me and my buddy did not even finish a fourth of the sandwich before we decided to go to in n out instead. The bread is soft (which was just not the sandwich's best feature) the avo spread was terrible (which was just green mayo, and i HATE mayo) and they drenched it with italian dressing and sprinkled some (what seemed to be fake) shredded mozzarella. Now i might have gotten the wrong sandwich, but i doubt it. The employee guaranteed us those were the two top sellers, and we believed them. If that was the most popular item, and we couldn't eat HALF OF HALF (i guess that's just a fourth), then im pretty sure we wouldn't have enjoyed the other sandwiches. We both vowed never to go again, because it was that terrible. My friend had to force down the sandwich because he didn't want to waste money or the food. eventually he was defeated though. I keep reading great reviews on this place. Maybe they had an off day- or I was having an off day? Either way, I still don't think I would try this place again.

The Litttle Pickle has the best sandwiches around. I started eating there about 2 months ago and now eat there atleast 2 times a week. The sandwiches are amazing and are not expensive at all. The guys that work there are really cool and the place has been there forever.

Madre de Dios! I'm full...Just had me a grinder with double meat and I'm just about comatose. I haven't been here in awhile. I used to come here back in the day when I was in prison. Well, not prison, but the Catholic grade school down the street on Baker. Steer clear of Quiznos and Lameway. This is your best bet for a great sammich. BTW, there is no more room for the fluff on the walls of the local teams that this place supports so they simply post a list that is displayed as you enter.

    (4)
  • monique s.

Best sandwhich place around! I always get the natural, which is turkey on wheat w/ avocado- except you need to know that their avo is basically avo maionaise, not slices of the actual fruit. Their macaroni salad is pretty good, too.

    (4)
  • Chase H.

Why are you people critiquing the best sandwich place ever? They have the best bread that I have ever had in my life! The #2 sub is the best sub I have had in my life. I have been to the little pickle several times, and it is way better than subway or quiznos. Definetly check this place out!

Lil Pickle is a Costa Mesa institution. This is the type of mom and pop business you want to support since it support the local community. All over the walls are pictures and plaques of local athletic teams thanking Lil Pickle for their support over the years. As for the food, the sandwich they make are basic, nothing fancy. The place used to be better and is past its prime. I think the original owner, Jim, is semi-retired now or he has since sold the place.

    (3)
  • Danny H.

If you are from Costa Mesa, you no doubt look up to the Lil Pickle. It's one of my old stand-bys and I'm sure many others as well. The avocado spread is TO DIE FOR. Try the "Natural" - delicious!

  • Heather H.

so good! i've seriously been going to to this place (well, on and off due to zip code) for 8 years! they are this little mom and pop place, with some sweet ass photos from little league teams from the 80s to admire while you munch away on tasty sandwiches. my personal fav is the veggie (#4 i think...), it comes on wheat bread, with mozzarella cheese, avocado spread, tomatoes and loads of lettuce. in a word "deliciousness"...that's right...deliciousness. this place is pretty cheap, the average sandwich + drink + chips costs about $6, and it's well worth it. the place is on the small side, so it's best for a group of 4 or less, i'd say...that way you can use up one table, and not have your group spilling over into other booths... the people here are super nice, so the line that can sometimes extend outside the front door should not deter you. you're in for a tasty treat my friends...

This place serves up one of the finest subs in all the merry lands of Orange County. In a city inundated with carne asada and burger joints, this family run, hole in the wall sandwich shop is like a vacation for your taste buds. I get The Grinder almost everytime I go. Fresh Roast beef packed inside fresh soft warm bread. I have to say, this place poops on all other sub shops! ITs DELICIOUS! SHOUT OUT TO DONUTS! the food and the listserve! both are equally as enjoyable!

    (5)
  • Louie N.

The go-to for Italian sandwiches. I don't mess with the hot subs here cause I'd go somewhere else if i wanted that. Anything with itailan coldcuts should be ordered up. And what separates this joint from other places? That would be the avocado mayo. No one else has it. One of the few spots holding Orange County down. Get the grinder with double meat. OHhhhhh maaaaan.......

Just started going here, but I love love their sandwiches, They're super good extra spicy! I got the italian sub last time, loved every bite of it. Something about the shredded cheese + avocado spread + peppers + bread makes it so delish!

Really fresh sandwich! The cold original Lil' Pickle sandwich is perfect when you're craving for something cold to neutralize the heat in the summer. If you're sick of Quizno's or Subway, give Lil' Pickle a try.

whenever i'm in the mood for a satisfying yet quick bite to eat, this place is definitely one of my favorites. i've only gone at lunch time, and it's a small tiny place so the line is always long and out the door. however, their service is so fast and efficient that you're at the front of the counter in no time. it's always the same older man at the register, and he is always so friendly when taking your order. your food comes out in just a few minutes (despite the long lines). i always get the famous sub, which is roast beef and salami, along with either macaroni salad or potato salad (both are excellent), but i'm pretty sure that all of their subs are equally good, it's just a matter of what you like. and the avocado spread (which they explain as mayo with avocado pulp) that comes in the sandwich just adds to the already great flavor. quick and friendly service with amazing food...what more can you ask for!?!!

This place has been here since I can remember (im 31). The food hasn't changed much, but the prices sure have (for the worse). The sandwiches/grinders/torpedos are very good. Lets face it, the place is small...like a shoebox. CASH ONLY. There are tables on one side of the shop and a counter/kitchen on the other side. For a sandwich shop, it's expensive. Can't imagine the rent in this place is more than a few hundred bucks a month, very small overhead I'd think, but a guy's gotta make a buck. My fav is the club sub...just ask for easy mayo, otherwise the meat will slip out the end. Not sure if it's still owned by the same family, but the guy who owned it had a daughter who went to CMHS and was big into sports.

  • Eric W.

Been coming here for the last 5 years. The lil pickle sub #1 is my favorite and I pretty much end up getting it every time I'm there. Love the bread and quality of ingredients. Comes with a pickle slice on the side. The regular size sandwich (about 10") is plenty filling for me and it's a great deal at just over $5 bucks. If you want something extra, the potato salad is also pretty tasty. If you frequent this place, grab a sandwich club card: Buy 8 sandwiches and get one for free!

  • Alice K.

Lil' Pickle was offering a sweet deal on their large subs, so I made the effort to stop by with my coupon. When I got here around noon, the place was pretty packed, which was a good sign. I ordered The Club, since it was one of their specialty subs, and the guy at the cashier seemed pretty nice. While I was waiting for my sandwich, I was busy looking at all the various elementary/middle school/high school sports teams that Lil' Pickle has sponsored over the years. I appreciated the fact that they were heavily involved in their community, which made me want to like this place even more. The sandwich was pretty standard. The meat and veggies seemed fresh, and I was pretty satisfied. It wasn't amazing, but I'd come by again to try another sandwich since I'm getting pretty sick of chain sandwich stores anyway. Nice mom and pop sandwich store. If you want to support a business that is heavily involved in the community and has a more "personal" feel to it, check this place out for yourself.

Every single time I've gone there for the past 5 years, I've ordered the exact same thing and have never been disappointed. I always get the #2 CLUB SUB. The softness of the sandwich bread and the unique blend of the ingredients for some reason make it one of my favorite sandwiches. The pickle that comes with it is real good too. (I ask for extra pickles on the side usually). #2 Club Sub with a Pepsi and a bag of BBQ chips..... that's the way to do it.

This little hidden gem is the best kept secret in Costa Mesa. I absolutely love the sandwiches. Cold sub sandwiches-a-plenty, the meats are fantastic, the cheese is freshly grated, and there's a secret Italian sauce that really sets this apart from any Subway or Quizyes. Plus, there's a fun quarter of a lil' pickle added with every sandwich for namesake. A little pricey, but everyone seems nice, and the food is absolutely far above par. That keeps me coming back. They're a huge supporter of Orange County College and local high school athletics and have been for the past 20 years. Their plaques and pictures are plentiful all around. Check em' out!

This being a sandwitch place I still gave it 4 stars excusing the poorly represented hot dog in their poster. I was excited when I walked in this place and they have a picture of a Chicago dog next to the menu, atomic relish n all. Unfortunately they don't make a Chicago dog but a interesting version of it on a sandwich roll with jalapenos instead of sport peppers and plane ol dill relish. I was disappointed when I first saw it but I have to admit it was pretty tasty, although jalapenos don't have nearly the heat of those little sport peppers they use in Chicago and it definitely wasn't Vienna beef. Also tried the original pickle sub here, great sandwich with fresh bread and ingredients, I will continue to get sandwiches here, probably not another dog, but if your not from Chicago or expecting an authentic Chicago style hot dog it may be worth a try. This being a sandwitch place I still gave it 4 stars excusing the poor representation of the hot dog in their poster, the food was great for the type of establishment!

Got the original sandwich (junior size). It was good because I was starved! However, like others have said - the avocado spread tastes more like mayo (nothing special), and the sandwich was skimpy in the meat department. The bread was nice and soft but other than that, Lil' Pickle USA is an ehh-okay place. Definitely too expensive for what you get, and the mac salad is WAY too sweet for my liking.

I usually have the roast beef or ham sandwich here. The ingredients are very fresh and good. Price is not bad, but the shop is in a run down area and the decor doesn't look like was was renovated since the 80s. Aah, the 80s...This sandwich shop has been here since 1962 or that is what the place claims... Total mom and pop shop.

I moved offices about a year ago now, and this lil sandwich shop is conveniently within walking distance from me now. I LOVE this lil spot! We (my co workers & I) usually eat here at least twice a week. It's close, cheap, and healthy. I get the same thing every time, and it never gets old! The #4 ... deeelicious wheat bread (which seems as if they baked the bread just for me, soOoOoo warm and soft.) with turkey, cheese, lettuce, and some tasty avacado mayo spread. Only once have i ever strayed away from this sandwich, and i was disappointed that i did! The ONLY downside to this place is that they only accept cash, but if you use their ATM to get cash, they'll give you a free drink. Also, If you get a sandwich card, you get a free sandwich after the 8th one. (So, for me it's once a every week or 2 .. can't complain!) If you need a quick lunch, i definitely recommend the pickle!
